I’ve got something to tell you!
Four weeks ago, I received an email congratulating me on winning a place on this year’s TGCS the Henley Mile. I’ve had several responses from my family and friends and the look on their faces has been priceless! I should have rethought my opening line when having the conversation with my husband though, as the colour drained from his face, “oh god, you’re not pregnant are you?”
You wouldn’t put exercise and myself together. So there has been many blank expressions, hysterical laughs and now the jokes! Has my Facebook account been hacked? Do I want to borrow my nephew’s armbands, oh and the sweepstake, with 50% of the money raised going to charity – the RNLI just in case it’s needed!
Taken on this swim, will be such a challenge, I’m not a strong swimmer, don’t like getting my face wet and hate cold water! My motivation for entering is my daughter Megan, about to sit her GCSEs, I wanted her to know that success isn’t all about getting the highest grades, and the best college & university places. So, I’ve accepted this challenge, and will cross the finishing line (probably in last place) but one of my biggest achievements ever! Training plan and swim hat in hand, off we go!
Now, I’m not sure what it is about mothers unless it is just my mum but she always seems to volunteer me for things. Family & work events, that I maybe don’t want to go to and yet she always manages to exceed herself. I mean this one has topped the charts! I have always been a relatively sporty girl but with school and GCSE’s I haven’t found the time to be involved with sports anymore. So, she decides that we will BOTH swim a mile in the River Thames! Brilliant! Thanks, Mum, I really love you!
Considering that I now have to swim a mile, I have started to train. I’m not going to lie; I have been procrastinating a little- but what do you expect? I’m only 15. She is also making me wear a swim hat! I have a hair routine when I go swimming to retain the inner frizziness but the swim hat has thrown me off! I look like an egg!
I am now going swimming 3 times a week (I know, just writing it sounds tiring) and Mum has got me on the exercise bike in the living room peddling away along to the ‘Fresh Prince of Belair’ theme tune! I am slightly worried about it but I am currently putting it at the back of my mind because my first GCSE exam is this Thursday so I have been rushing around like crazy trying to get all the props I need for my Photography exam. Wish me luck! Luckily, I will be provided with strawberry bonbons which may not be the best idea but I need all the energy I can get!
At least when I am swimming I’m not being graded!
(I love you really mum!)
